Continuous Glucose Monitors Identifies Trends
A Continuous Glucose Monitoring System (CGMS) is an FDA approved device that records glucose levels. A wireless sensor device is placed just under the skin of your abdomen. The insertion is quick and is usually not painful. The sensor measures the level of glucose in your tissues every 1- seconds and sends the information to a pager-sized monitor. The system records an average glucose value every 5 minutes for up to 72 hours.
Our office currently uses several of these devices to assist you and your doctor to discover trends in glucose levels and to make decisions regarding your treatment plan. The main advantage of CGMS is that can help identify fluctuations and trends that would otherwise go unnoticed with intermittent finger sticks.
We have found this technology to be especially helpful to our patients who experience hypoglycemia unawareness, are on insulin pumps or have been unable to unravel the mystery of their fluctuations as related to food and activity.
